Brown Spot Treatment

Medi-Spa at Knoxville Dermatology Group provides state-of-the-art brown spot treatments for the reduction or removal of:

  • Brown spots
  • Age spots
  • Sun spots
  • Liver spots
  • Freckles
  • Melasma
  • Hyperpigmentation

Dark spots are usually caused by sun damage from UVA rays, which result in the body’s production of excess melanin. Much of this damage occurs before the age of 18, but the spots do not appear until later in life. We generally use cryotherapy to treat brown spots, but minor uneven skin tone can also be treated with Chemical Peels and Medical Microdermabrasion. If a laser is a better option for you, we use Intense Pulsed Light (IPL), Pearl and Pearl Fractional, and Q-Switch. All of these options allow us the flexibility to choose the best treatment for your specific spots and provide you with the best possible result. The lasers work by transmitting high energy light through the top layers of skin to target the excess melanin. The spots absorb the light, and the melanin pigment breaks up into fragments that are discarded by your body’s immune system.

GETTING BROWN SPOT TREATMENT

Brown Spot Treatment can be performed on the face, hands, chest, and other parts of the body.

The amount of time required for your appointment will depend on the number of spots you wish to lighten. You may require more than one treatment 4-6 weeks apart to achieve your desired outcome.

DARK SPOT REMOVAL RESULTS AND RECOVERY

The results are usually permanent, but new brown spots may form and require subsequent treatments. Your best defense is protecting your skin from the sun. While laser treatment for brown spots requires minimum downtime, you may experience some redness and welts for a few days. Some people also notice slight flaking or crusting of the skin in the treatment areas, and your dark spots may become a bit darker before they lighten.

IS BROWN SPOT TREATMENT SAFE?

Since laser technology does not require the skin to be punctured, it is very safe. One of the main advantages of lasers is that they can target the cells that need to be treated without harming the surface layers of skin and surrounding tissues. Cryotherapy is also a very safe treatment for brown spots. We can treat darker skin types based on appropriate settings. We will assess your skin and determine if you are at risk of side effects.
